Bredeweg's parents were Edward George Bredeweg (1861-1951) and Mary Myrtle "Mamie" (or "Mae"?) McGrury (1876-1961); they were married in 1895. Lorene was their middle daughter, the others apparently being Alma B. (1896-1956, married name Thuman) and Lucille (1911-1927).

While a student at the University of Illinois, Bredeweg was active in the Alethenai Literary Society, served on the art staff for the yearbook, was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, the University Orchestra, and the student Entertainment Committee. She graduated in 1919 and found work doing advertising work in Chicago that same year.

Bredeweg illustrated at least two articles for The Rotarian (October 1924 and April 1925 issues).
