Averil Courtney Conwell, 603 Thatcher Avenue, River Forest

Averil Courtney Conwell (Mrs. L. D.) is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago and attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. She has studied under Albrecht Stich of Munich, Wellington J. Reynolds, John H. Vanderpoel, John Norton, Carl Krafft, John Nolf and Edmund Giesbert.

She maintained a studio in the Auditorium tower, Chicago, doing commercial craft work, and later newspaper work. She joined the Art League in 1928. Was a member of the Board of Directors, and Program Chairman, 1930-38, inaugurating the Sunday evening supper program. Was first Vice President, 1937-38, and has been teacher of the childrens classes since 1931.

Has exhibited at the Art League, Art Institute and other galleries in Chicago and other cities. Has had special exhibits in New York and Kansas City; Findlay Galleries, Chicago; and summer shows at Lake Placid, N. Y. She executed the murals for St. Mary’s Hospital, De Kalb, Ill., and Mt. Carmel Academy, Clinton, Iowa.

She is a Director of The Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors; a member of The Arts Club of Chicago, Chicago Woman’s Salon, All-Illinois Society of The Fine Arts, Chicago No Jury Society, Chicago Galleries Association, Art Institute Alumni Association, River Forest Woman’s Club. Is listed in Who’s Who in American Art. Has a studio in her River Forest home and one in her summer home in the Adirondacks.
