May Hardman Gilruth
May (Hardman) Gilruth was born July 19, 1885 near Jane Lew, WV and died on October 23, 1962, in Chicago, IL. May’s full name was Anna May (Hardman) Gilruth but she disliked her given first name and never used it.
May attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and later Ohio Wesleyan College, graduating in 1909. She also attended and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Irwin T. Gilruth in 1917 and lived at 7206 Euclid Ave. They had two children, Jane and Roger.
May Gilruth’s mediums were primarily pencil, watercolors, woodcuts and oil paints. She produced numerous serigraphs and lithographs of work mostly during the 1940’s and 50’s.
May was a listed artist and belonged to National Association of Women Artists. She exhibited in shows such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Gallery of Modern Life, Chicago, Chicago Society of Artists, Davis Store Galleries, and the American Watercolor Society.
Auction records are rare and most of Mrs. Gilruth’s art has been retained by family and friends throughout the years.
